Tour / Activity Description

Bike Single Track on Three Beautiful Trails

The new mountain biking tour at Hotel Hacienda Guachipelin at the Rincon de la Vieja National Park travels on single track trails on three different routes that can satisfy all levels: beginner, intermediate and expert. Hacienda Guachipelin keeps 30 kilometers of trails and single track trails under the shade, with incredible views – the only trails for mountain biking in Costa Rica on an active volcano! The altitude makes this area cooler and more enjoyable than the trails located in the coastal area.

All of these exciting adventure mountain biking trips in Costa Rica start at the same point, driving on a single track through the forest along a river. We start at 500 meters of altitude. These trails with excellent shade stay cool, and being surrounded by nature gives you ample opportunities to see wild animals such as monkeys, capuchin monkeys (or white-faced), coatis, armadillos, and peacocks.

Our route takes you to La Oropendola waterfall, where you can go for a dip. Then, continue on the path in the tropical forest bordering the Rincon de la Vieja National Park, crossing several bridges, some over rivers, back to Hotel Hacienda Guachipelin.

Hacienda Guachipelin uses only high-quality mountain bikes and offers both front suspension and dual suspension bikes.

Mountain Biking Options

Beginner: 12.5-km trip; ascent: 5.5 km; descent 7 km; Duration: 1.5 to 2.5 hours; $85
Intermediate: 16-km journey; ascent: 5.5 km; descent with ups and downs: 10.5 km; duration 2 – 3 hours; $97.5
Advanced: 30-km journey. The first part of the trip requires 5.5 km of ascent and 7 km of descent with ups and downs. The second part is a 17.5-km trail next to the Rincon de la Vieja National Park in variable terrain with ups and downs; mostly with forest cover. There will be another opportunity to cool off with a dip in the pool of a waterfall near the park. Duration: 3-4 hours; $110

Iron Horse Mountain Bike Tour – $170

Spend a Full Day Biking, Horseback Riding, Swimming, and More
Experience the excitement of touring the rugged terrain of an active volcano in Costa Rica on single track trails and dirt roads, within the tropical dry forest and splashing across rivers. Cyclists of all ages and abilities can enjoy this adventure of medium difficulty.

Our unique mountain bike tour in Costa Rica is a real adventure because it includes several sports such as horseback riding, swimming in waterfalls, mountain biking, tubing, and canopy – all included in a full-day tour you will never forget! We also have a shortened version with a half-day tour that includes horseback riding and mountain biking.

On our full-day Iron Horse Mountain Bike Tour, you start riding horses from Hacienda Guachipelin to the Rincon de la Vieja volcano through dense forests until you reach the starting point of the bike. Cool off with a little rest, swimming in the pool of a hidden waterfall, where the pure waters flow from the volcanic rock in the forest.

Then you can descend from the volcano by mountain bike, driving on dirt roads and natural single track trails created by cattle that roam the hacienda, for 15 kilometers inside the forest, crossing rivers and paddocks. The panoramic views of the valley and the paddocks are spectacular.

Then we ride our bicycles to the Negro River and keep our adrenaline pumping with the fun and refreshing Tubing Tour in Rio Negro. The adventure does not end here, either. Recharge your batteries with a delicious lunch at Hotel Hacienda Guachipelin, followed by an exciting afternoon flying on the cables of the Canopy Tour del Cañon. This is an adventure that can’t be missed!

About Hacienda Guachipelin: Guanacaste’s rich traditions of ranching and cowboy life are deeply rooted at Hacienda Guachipelin. Dating all the way back to 1880, our land has been a flourishing ranch, spreading across the golden savanna and dry tropical forest at the base of the magnificent Rincon de la Vieja Volcano. Since 1975, two generations of the Batalla family have loved and worked this ranch land, keeping its legacy alive. Our family’s ranch covers 3,460 acres (1,400 hectares), with conservation areas for the tropical dry forest that we are reforesting with native tree species. Three rivers crisscross our land – Rio Blanco, Rio Colorado, and Rio Negro – creating waterfalls, natural hot springs, and fun places for adventure tours. We raise horses, cattle, pigs, chickens, and turkeys and grow our own fruit trees along with vegetables and herbs in our gardens, greenhouse, and farmland. You can enjoy fresh, homegrown meals from our ranch in our hotel restaurant. We have 90 Costa Rican horses for ranch work and our horseback riding tours, as well as 12 Spanish breeding mares and stallions. And we keep about 220 heads of Brahman cattle and related breeds for beef and milk. We do our best to operate our hotel and ranch as sustainably and eco-friendly as possible. And we are proud that Hotel Hacienda Guachipelin holds the third level of the Certification for Sustainable Tourism (CST) program by the Costa Rican Tourism Board (ICT). We welcome you to experience the beauty and traditions of Rincon de la Vieja Volcano and Hacienda Guachipelin.
